It's because HDMI is HDCP Compliant. ie: a compliant player will disable the analog signal when both are attached.
You can try to "skirt' this by using the TV's Audio Out RCAs or 3.5mm located at the rear of the TV to feed the stereo. I've done this myself many times at many places.
